The Story of shipwreck Shiraz

In December 2010, Hidden Valley Wines dropped a French oak barrel into the ocean, off the Cape Of Storms at the Cape Agulhas lighthouse. After 15 months marine maturation, which allowed the barrel and the wine inside it to interact ever so slightly with the sea around it, the barrel was retrieved and Shipwreck Shiraz was born. The full story.

Product Description

Tasting notes

Hand harvested at an average of 25 Balling. Bunch and berry sorted, de-stemmed and crushed into open stainless steel cuve. Punched down three to four times a day during fermentation. Malolactic fermentation in a 225L third fill French oak barrel. “Under-sea” Marine Maturation at 12,5 meters deep, off Cape of Storms in the Agulhas current.

Soft deep red in colour, this wine, matured under optimal conditions under the sea, is elegant and understated with a complexity and minerality true to its terroir. Surprisingly lush yet defined red and dark fruit flavours lead to mouth-watering savoury notes at the end of the palate. A delicate sea saltiness lingers on the aftertaste.

Food pairing recommendation

Ideally paired with: Seafood such as game fish will compliment this wine of the sea.
